Un dittico del più importante e oggi rappresentato drammaturgo inglese, due storie ironiche, parossistiche, molto umane: una bella prova per le due attrici che le portano ora in scena a Cagliari. Fanno parte di una raccolta di monologhi scritti da Alan Bennett in due cicli, negli anni ottanta e novanta, dedicati a famosi attori e attrici inglesi e dati prima in televisione e poi a teatro. Raccolti sotto il tiolo di Talking Heads, parlano di un’umanità che della solitudine fa una lente sul mondo, un particolarissimo e molto acuto punto di vista sulla realtà dalla quale pare esclusa. È il caso di Miss Ruddok che interpreta a suo modo il mondo spiandolo dalla finestra, e ne trae una furente attività epistolare. Da qui l’ironia già insita nel titolo, Una donna di lettere. Scrive lettere, Miss Ruddok, grondanti sdegno e protesta per tutto ciò che vede, finché non viene presa, un giorno, e reclusa per le sue diffamazioni e affidata agli assistenti sociali: e lì ritrova la sua “famiglia”, persone reali, con altre storie di solitudine e disadattamento. Ecco, darsi da fare, scrivere lettere per loro, come in fondo fa lo stesso Bennett con le sue creature. E Miss Ruddok ritrova una sua forma di felicità senza perdere il suo vizio…

E un’altra forma di ossessione è quella per la pulizia, che condiziona la giornata dell’anziana Doris in Una fetta biscottata sotto il divano: sono sì i segni di un isolamento e di una dimenticanza in cui la nostra società relega gli anziani, ma anche i fuochi di una follia che si fa metafora del mondo, sprazzi di una visione diversa e spesso illuminante che quei personaggi dimenticati sanno gettare sulla realtà.

Alan Bennett, pluripremiato scrittore, sceneggiatore e drammaturgo inglese, nasce a Leeds, nello Yorkshire, il 9 Maggio del 1934. Oltre alla sua attività per il teatro, la televisione, la radio – ma è anche sceneggiature e scrittore di numerosi racconti e romanzi – fa molte apparizioni come attore. La voce lugubre eppure così espressiva di Bennett (caratterizzata da quel leggero accento di Leeds), l’umore aspro e l’umanità evidente della sua scrittura hanno reso molto popolari le sue letture delle sue stesse opere (specie quelle che sono di matrice autobiografica). Sono altrettanto famose le sue letture delle storie di Winnie the Pooh.
Molti dei personaggi di Bennett sono sfortunati e oppressi, oppure miti e trascurati. La vita li ha portati ad una impasse, oppure è passata loro accanto. Bennett ce ne presenta le fragilità. Come si può vedere nella serie televisiva Talking Heads: una serie di monologhi trasmessi tra la fine degli anni 70 e gli anni 80 e successivamente portati al Comedy Theatre di Londra nel 1992. Un secondo sestetto viene scritto dieci anni dopo.
Tra le sue opere, The History boys, acclamatissimo da pubblico e critica, ha ottenuto ben tre Olivier Awards. Bennett stesso ha ottenuto un Olivier Award per il suo “eccezionale contributo al Teatro Britannico”, oltre ad altri numerosi premi e riconoscimenti.

A diptych of the most important and today represented English playwright , two stories ironic , paroxysmal , very human : a good test for the two lead actresses that now play at Cagliari. They are part of a collection of monologues written by Alan Bennett in two cycles , in the eighties and nineties , dedicated to famous actors and actresses on television and English data first and then to the theater. Collected under the thiol of the Talking Heads , speak of humanity that loneliness is a lens on the world, a very special and very keen perspective on reality from which it seems is not included. This is the case of Miss Ruddok which interprets in its own way the world spiandolo the window, and draws a furious epistolary activity . Hence the irony already inherent in the title, A woman of letters. He writes letters, Miss Ruddok , dripping scorn and protest for everything he sees , until he is taken , one day, and a recluse for his defamation and entrusted to social workers : and there he finds his “family” , real people , with other stories of loneliness and maladjustment . Here , get busy, writing letters for them, as at the end of Bennett does the same with his creatures . And Miss Ruddok finds its own form of happiness without losing its vice …

It is another form of obsession for cleanliness, which conditions the day of old Doris in A rusk under the couch : so are the signs of an isolation and an oversight in our society relegates the elderly, but even the fires of madness that becomes a metaphor of the world, glimpses of a different and often enlightening those who know how to throw forgotten characters on reality.

Alan Bennett, award-winning writer , English playwright and screenwriter , born in Leeds , Yorkshire , on 9 May 1934 . In addition to his work for the theater, television, radio – but it is also a writer of screenplays and numerous short stories and novels – makes many appearances as an actor. The mournful voice yet so expressive Bennett (characterized by the slight accent of Leeds ) , mood sour and evident humanity of his writing have made it very popular his readings of his own works (especially those that are autobiographical ) . They are just as famous for his readings of the stories of Winnie the Pooh.
Many of Bennett ‘s characters are unfortunate and downtrodden, or meek ​​and overlooked. Life has brought them to an impasse , or has passed them by. Bennett presents the fragility there . As you can see in the television series Talking Heads : a series of monologues transmitted between the late 70s and 80s and later taken to the Comedy Theatre in London in 1992. A second sextet is written ten years later.
Among his works , The History Boys , acclaimed by critics and audiences , won three Olivier Awards. Bennett himself has obtained an Olivier Award for his ” outstanding contribution to British theater ” , in addition to numerous other awards and accolades.
