Salzburg, Salzburg German, or castle of salt has about 150,000 inhabitants, is situated in the Province of north-central, is the capital of the federal state of Salzburg and is situated on the river Salzach in Italian by the salt.
After Vienna, the Austrian city most visited by tourists from all over the world, lovers of art and culture. And ‘considered the undisputed center of the music world, known especially as the home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in which everything, monuments, streets, to chocolates, is inspired. The connection of the city with the music is very strong, as demonstrated by the Conservatives and the many existing concert events that are held here, including the famous concert Summer Festival (Salzburger Festspiele).
Salzburg is a delicious and romantic city of great historical and cultural interest, rich in monuments and ancient buildings, which are an important architectural treasure. Not surprisingly, is known as the “Florence of the North” and its historic center is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This area, which is the oldest in the city, extending between the Salzach and the hills and is wonderfully crowded with a picturesque network of streets, squares with fountains, ancient houses, domes and buildings mostly in the Baroque style. But among the most beautiful parts of Salzburg there are undoubtedly its sights, from which it offers beautiful views so as to be difficult to beat.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg)
One of the highest points of Salzburg Fortress Hohensalzburg (High Salzburg), which dominates the city center and offers a wonderful viewpoint, which since 1892 can also be accessed by cable car. Currently, with a fortified area of 14,000 square meters, is considered the largest intact fortress in central Europe, one of the few that has never been conquered or damaged in any way.
The castle began to be built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard, who in 1085 but was forced into exile, leaving the project unfinished. His successors completed it and, between the fifteenth and sixteenth century, Archbishop Leonard von Keutschach enlarged it, giving the current semblance. Since 1120 the building became the bishop’s residence but its function changed from the end of the nineteenth century when, instead of a defensive fortress, the castle became a prison and barracks, but today it houses a museum and various events throughout the year, but especially is one of the most popular for the execution of chamber concerts.
The fortification is the central building in the Romanesque style, once intended for residential use, said Hoher Stock, numerous outbuildings and a church of their own. Particularly worthy of interest are the medieval rooms of the prince and the Fortress Museum.

The Salzburg Cathedral
The Cathedral is the most important religious building in Salzburg and at the same time it is the spiritual center. Throughout its history, it also trace some of the vicissitudes highlights of the city.
The original cathedral was built in 774, but this first building was already destroyed by fire in 1166, hanged by the followers of Barbarossa, after which it took ten years to be reopened yards and Salzburg could have a new cathedral. This building, which seems to surpass in magnificence and grandeur all other imperial cathedrals, was again damaged by fire in 1598. The then Archbishop Wolf advantage of the fire to raze the building, without save fluid furnishings and works of art contained in it, and give rise to a new building. The latter, however, never saw the light, at least until, between 1614 and 1628, was not given a new project to the architect Santino Solari, who gave birth to the first Baroque cathedral north of the Alps while the surrounding area was arranged with the opening of four squares designed by Scamozzi, the Cathedral took the form of a basilica, with an imposing dome formed by three apses and a beautiful facade with two towers. The walls were entirely filled with decorations in fresco and stucco still well preserved. After the second reconstruction in 1628, the Salzburg Cathedral was damaged again, this time by a bomb of World War II, which destroyed the dome and the presbytery. The reconstruction was completed in 1959, returned to the cathedral its present, consecrating it for the umpteenth time in the sanctuary of the beloved city.
Some of the most valuable of Salzburg Cathedral are the treasure of the Carolingian era, the magnificent entrance doors, the beautiful main body, surrounded by angels playing, and the baptismal font where he was baptized on the same Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The famous musician, just as organist of the cathedral and the first violin, wrote to Salzburg and eternal numerous compositions of sacred music.

The Residence Palace
The Residence Palace, overlooking the square, is one of the most important historic buildings in the historic center of Salzburg, once the seat of the prince archbishops who ruled Salzburg. From this place, from birth until the passage of the ecclesiastical principality of Salzburg to the Austrian Empire, were decided the political fate of the city.
The first evidence of the archbishopric in the Residence Palace date back to the Middle Ages. Since then, every prince who puts his hand to its structure, modifying it according to your taste. The embellishments most important, however, can be attributed to the archbishops most influential artistic life of the city: Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who had it built in the sixteenth century and which has taken the Baroque style building, Paris Lodron and Franz Anton Harrach, whose crests overlooking the entrance to the marble of the residence, located in the square of the town.
Given its location and its magnificence, the building was a showcase of representation throughout imperial history of Salzburg. Here he was welcomed Napoleon III Emperor Franz Joseph in 1867 and here the Diet Salzburg swore allegiance to the Emperor Francis I of Austria, marking the end of the ecclesiastical principality and it became part of the Empire. In addition to receiving diplomatic delegations visiting the city, the Old Residence was home for nearly thirty years Queen Caroline Augusta, fourth wife of Francis I, who established his summer residence here. We owe it to her, among other things the creation of the Salzburger Museum, titled “Carolino Augusteum” in his honor and located nell’antistante New Residence, near Mozart.
The residence has its more than 180 rooms, including 15 state rooms on the first floor are still used as representation and exhibitions, or can be rented for private events of all kinds, other rooms are still home to the University town.
It should be noted that this building performed Mozart himself. In particular, he made his debut at the age of 6 years in the Council Chamber and then played in various concerts: December 20, 1775 in the Conference Room for the first time performed the Violin Concerto in A major, sometimes performed in the Hall of Knights, for the exceptional acoustics is still home to many concerts.

The Mirabell Palace
The Mirabell Palace is still an outstanding example of luxury and beauty. It is located in the historical center of the city, although it was not always within the context of citizen.
Originally, it was located outside the walls and was to serve as a noble residence for Salome Alt, lover of the then ruler of Salzburg, Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, and their 15 illegitimate children. Forced to abdicate in 1612, the bishop was imprisoned in the same building, and in its place reigned over the city of Salzburg’s cousin, Archbishop Markus Sittikus von Hohenems. It was to give the building the name of Mirabell Palace, and until the death of von Raitenau it was called Palazzo Altenau.
During the seventeenth century, the expansion of the city took the building and its garden within the city walls and then, in 1727, it underwent modifications and embellishments in baroque style, until it assumed its present appearance. One of the most fascinating parts of the Castle Garden is the magnificent home, as much as Mirabellplatz, a Christmas market.
In the garden there are classical statues, beautiful fountains, the Garden gnomes and Baroque Museum. Despite the glitz, today the palace is still very simple and unadorned than it was in the past. This is due to the architectural choice made by Peter de Noble, court architect, but certainly also the fire of 1818, which thankfully spared the monumental stairway of Lukas von Hilldebrandt, with sculptures of angels by Georg Raphael Donner, and the room marble leads to it.
Today in the Mirabell Palace are the offices of the Mayor of Salzburg and the village hall is used for the celebration of civil marriages.
The Castle Hellbrunn
In 1612, a few months after his accession to the throne, Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, he was commissioned to build a suburban villa at the foot of a hill full of springs called Hellbrunn. As an admirer of art and Italian culture, Markus Sittikus entrusted the construction of the building to the famous Santino Solari, former architect of the Duomo. The goal was to build a building that, as the summer residence, in splendor and costliness had nothing to envy to its beautiful Italian models. And so, in a relatively short construction time, the southern edge of Salzburg was built an architectural jewel which is still among the most beautiful Renaissance buildings north of the Alps
From the beginning the water was a key element in the architecture of the building and especially his wonderful Italian garden. The numerous springs of Mount Hellbrunn, in fact, guaranteed the creation of spectacular water, with great vitality. In the shade of trees and bushes, and gushing from unexpected hiding places, water games were the main attraction among the entertainment of the guests in Hellbrunn. Even today, thanks to the perfect state of preservation, one can contemplate, almost unchanged, the jets of hydraulic and mechanical play result.
All this shows that Hellbrunn rarely has played a REAL archbishop’s residence and that, rather, the castle was a place of great celebrations, sumptuous shows and cultural events. So, already 400 years ago, the Hellbrunn Palace was designed to accommodate the worldliness and international events, which makes today a very popular place and keeping up with the times! If, however, the visitors era came to Hellbrunn on a trip to go there to hunt or participate in elegant receptions, today I go to conferences, seminars and social events.

The birthplace of Mozart
W. A. Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 at 9 Getreidegasse.
The Mozart family then lived on the third floor of this building bourgeois built before 1400 in the heart of old Salzburg. But Wolfgang Amadeus, the youngest of seven children, did not stay there very long because his father, Leopold, serving as director of the Prince Archbishop of the court chapel, could soon afford to move with his family to a larger house in Makartplatz and From that moment, he devoted himself to music education, Amadeus and his sister Nannerl, which he had to abandon his musical career to get married.
Since then, the building in Getreidegasse with its beautiful courtyard, not much has changed, apart from the Rococo facade rebuilt in classical style. The building is now owned by the International Mozarteum Foundation, which since 1880 has made it a museum dedicated to the musician. Inside you will find some of the most priceless objects that belonged to the musical genius, like the violin used by the child, the concert violin, harpsichord, pianoforte, then manuscripts, portraits and letters of the Mozart family.
The first floor of the museum is divided into three themes: “Mozart and the University of Salzburg”, “The friendship between Mozart and some families Salzburg” and “Sacred music and the cult of saints.” Moreover, since 1981 this part of Mozart’s birthplace home of the annual special exhibitions organized by the Fondazione International Mozarteum and having always as an argument the composer’s life.
The second floor is dedicated to the theme “Mozart in the theater.” Numerous dioramas (miniature stage) shows the history of the reception of the works of Mozart and documents the various forms of interpretation of time.
Mozart’s house in Makartplatz
In this house the Mozart family lived from 1773 to 1787.
The need to move from the house of Getreidegasse depended largely on the career of Mozart. As early as 1765, in fact, when Amadeus was about 9 years old, Leopold complained about the lack of space for themselves and their children in need of private rooms to practice and work without obstruct each other.
The house Makartplatz became available in 1773 and the Mozart family moved there after returning from a trip to Vienna, which lasted a few months. The house remained the property of Mozart for many years, although for the most part there is only Leopold lived due to the death of his wife, in 1778, the departure of the son Amadeus in 1780 and the marriage of his daughter Nannerl in 1784.
After Leopold’s death, the house was inhabited by new owners until the Second World War, when in 1944 a bomb destroyed two thirds of it. Following the old projects, however, it was possible to rebuild it and the inauguration took place on 26 January 1996.
In 1989 the whole building was taken over by the International Mozarteum Foundation, which has transformed into the museum.
