Here’s the schedule drawn up by Paul Gilbert, day by day:

PROGRAM (english)

  • Day 1: What: This will be demonstration of my favorite scales, arpeggios, and phrases for solo guitar. I’ll include neck diagrams so everyone can play along and have something to refer to later. Many of these shapes are unique to me. I haven’t seen another guitarist use them! I will cover styles such as rock, blues, metal, and jazz.
  • Day 2: How: This will be an explanation of the techniques that I use to play the material from Day 1. I will break down my complex techniques into very simple parts, and give recommendations for practicing. Picking and Legato techniques will be demonstrated in detail.
  • Day 3: When: This class will discuss rhythm, tempo, accents, and endings. This is how to apply the material in a song and make it sound musical (not like an exercise.) I will encourage students to come up and jam, to try these ideas.
  • Day 4: Why: This class will discuss songs: How to understand chords and play chords that usually are only played by piano players, how to learn songs by ear, how to get musical ideas and inspiration from any song, how to learn from other instruments, and how to perform for an audience.

I’m definitely happy to bring some students up on stage.
