LA VERA STORIA DI BABBO NATALE THE VERY HISTORY SANTA CLAUS

L’infanzia di molti è stata rovinata da un’inguaribile ambiguità: chi è che porta i regali, Babbo Natale o Gesù Bambino? E perché ad alcuni vengono consegnati alla Vigilia ad altri il 25? Chi sono quelli che festeggiano Santa Lucia e perché? Senza contare che i regali arrivavano in case diverse, sparpagliati, dalla nonna, dalla zia, dagli amici del papà, ma venivano portati senpre da lui, Babbo, che conosceva l’agenda degli spostamenti natalizi di ogni bambino. Babbo Natale è un tipo organizzato, questo è chiaro, ma veniamo a lui. (sfoglia la gallery a fianco)

IL SOLO E UNICO SAN NICOLA
Il primo e unico Babbo Natale è il vescovo Nicola. Nato verso il 270 a Pàtara in Licia, la regione dell’odierna Turchia dove oggi si trova Antalya (e le spiagge più gettonate), fu eletto vescovo di Myra (sempre in Turchia) e divenne presto un personaggio in odore di santità. Di lui si dice di tutto. Non solo combatteva povertà e carestie, ma l’agiografia ricorda anche come abbia placato una tempesta in mare, resuscitato tre scolari uccisi da un oste, salvato tre sorelle dalla prostituzione donando al padre tre sacchetti d’oro da usare come dote. Quando il vescovo muore, il 6 dicembre, alla sua tomba di Myra si susseguono i pellegrinaggi di fedeli da ogni dove.

Facciamo un balzo in avanti, fino al 1087, quando un gruppo di 62 marinai baresi (tra i quali anche i sacerdoti Lupo e Grimoldo) partono per una spedizione a Myra, diventata musulmana. Il loro intento? Trafugano i resti del santo, ormai in mano dei pagani, e più velocemente dei veneziani (anche loro a”a caccia di santi”). Riesco a prendere parte dello scheletro e lo trasportano, con tutti gli onori a Bari, proprio quando si sta innalzando la grande cattedrale romanica che oggi custodisce il sepolcro del Santo. A Myra rimane l’antica cattedrale, più volte restaura e dove, nella cripta è stato ritrovato l’antico sarcofago, spaccato sui lati per estrarre il corpo del santo. A Bari Nicola viene venerato il 6 dicembre, giorno della sua morte e il 9 maggio, la data delle traslazione. Il suo aiuto è richiesto da tutti e per ogni necessità: le zittelle invocano il suo aiuto girando intorno alla colonna Miracolosa nella Cripta per trovare marito, ma da sempre la resurrezione dei tre scolari gli valse la fama di Santo dei Bambini.

IN ITALIA, DAI SATURNALI A NICOLA
Ma facciamo un passo indietro a due antiche feste romane. Il 17 dicembre si celebravano i Saturnalia, in onore del dio Saturno, festa in cui i ricchi e i poveri festeggiavano insieme scambiandosi ruoli. I poveri vestiti da ricchi, i ricchi da poveri.  Il 1 gennaio per l’inizio dell’anno nuovo ci si scambiava i doni, erano le Strenne. Dal 325 a Roma si attesta però anche il radicamento dei festeggiamenti per la Nascita di Gesù, il 25 dicembre. Fu questa celebrazione cattolica a inserirsi con sempre più forza tra i festeggiamenti pagani dei Sturnalia e del Capodanno, e anche se non era intenzione della cristianità insistere sulla regola dello scambio dei regali, come successe spesso, dovette piegarsi alla tradizione pagana, e mantenere l’uso dello scambio di doni. Ma chi era fautore di quei doni? Se non erano più in favore di Saturno o per celebrare i frutti della terra del nuovo anno si individuarono i Magi, poi la Befana (l’antica Strenia romana) come fonte di generosità, fino a quando non entrò sulla scena storica San Nicola, il santo che donava oro ai bisognosi, raffigurato con tre sacchi d’oro o sfere d’oro in mano. Nel mille San Nicola era il più amato tra i santi, non c’era gara, e fu lui che si prese l’onore e l’onere dei doni.

I REGALI DI NATALE
Non si sa quando furono consegnati i primi regali in nome del vescovo. Forse in Francia nel XII secolo, mentre a Strasburgo nel 1480 un benefattore il 6 dicembre vestiva i panni di San Nicola e faceva doni ai bambini. In Germania comparve Knecht Ruprecht, un piccolo aiutante di Babbo Natale, ma è la tradizione olandese che ha posto il primo passo perché il santo turco si trasformasse nel Babbo Natale che conosciamo oggi.

Secondo la tradizione dei Paesi Bassi Sinterklaas vive in Spagna tuto l’anno e annota sul suo libro rosso tutto quello che di bene o male fanno i bambini. A novembre è pronto a partire insieme al suo aiutante Zwarte Piet, un piccolo servo moresco (ritorna l’origine turca) che si collega alla figura del diavolo, arriva al porto di Amsterdam e poi la notte del 5 dicembre cavalca i cieli distribuendo i suoi regali. Un Babbo Natale buono, ma non solo perché il suo aiutante ha un sacco abbastanza grande per portar via i bambini capricciosi. A parte questo, chiunque passerà un Natale (5 dicembre) in Olanda sarà obbligato a comporre una poesia in rima per prendere in giro i famigliari o amici, firmata Sinterklaas.

Come è noto, per il marketing San Nicola dovette aspettare gli americani: portato dagli olandesi a Nuova Yorka ancora con le fattezze del vescovo severo ritornò da oltreoceano nella sua versione Coca Cola, ovvero come lo conosciamo noi. Aspetto bonario, barbuto, rubicondo, che viaggia nel cielo su una slitta trainata dalle renne. E vestito in rosso e bianco. È così che apparve Santa Calus in una pubblicità della Coca Coca nel 1931 grazie alla penna dell’illustratore Haddon Sundblom, che mise insieme i ricordi di San Nicola e il personaggio e dello “spirito del Natale presente”, descritto da Chales Dickens nel racconto Canto di Natale. Un signore grosso, panciuto, e vestito di verde. Con il rosso e una grande maestria, il risultato fu perfetto.

È lui ormai il Babbo che ha colonizzato la storia, un “brand” che la società londinese Brand Finance proprio in questi giorni (dicembre 2013) ha stimato in oltre mille miliardi di euro (la mela della apple è di “soli” 63 miliardi). Piano piano il Novecento ha lasciato gnomi, sante lucie e gesù bambini a combattere contro il potere dei media. Come è successo, per esempio in Svezia, dove in origine era un caprone a portare i doni, poi uno gnomo, e quindi Santa Claus che il 24 dicembre, bussa alla porta e chiede: «Ci sono bambini buoni in casa?». Immaginiamoci la risposta.
