La storia del giardino segue quella di ogni civiltà e la sua nascita si lega alla formazione della città, quando il paesaggio cerca un legame tra la natura e l’architettura. Il giardino diventa non solo un tema di riferimento urbano, ma lo strumento di costruzione del rapporto con la natura inserita con nuove modalità, figure e linguaggi all’interno della struttura della città e della razionalità dell’architettura.
La sua evoluzione è legata a percorsi storici ed espressioni di pensiero che hanno caratterizzato la storia dell’uomo.
Attualmente quasi quattro cittadini europei su cinque vivono in città: la qualità della loro vita dipende in gran parte dalla qualità dell’ambiente urbano.
La recente Legge 10/2013 recepisce pienamente tale esigenza, considerando lo sviluppo delle aree verdi urbane non solo come un elemento estetico ed ecologico delle nostre città, ma come un vero e proprio servizio che deve essere reso ai cittadini e mettendo in evidenza il ruolo centrale delle piante per il miglioramento dell’ambiente (esercitato con la loro azione di filtraggio dell’atmosfera), per la regimazione delle acque, per la loro influenza sul clima, per il monitoraggio dei parametri ambientali e per il benessere della nostra psiche.
