Nella favola  di Charles Perrault, Pollicino viene abbandonato nel bosco dai genitori, per tornare a casa affronta ogni genere di pericolo a cominciare dal solito Orco che non ha nessuna simpatia per i bambini.

Il racconto di Pollicino, come quello di Hansel e Gretel con il tema della fame in primo piano, può essere interpretato come un insegnamento per i bambini affinché superino quella che Freud chiama la fase orale. Pollicino rinuncia a mangiare e invece impara a usare la sua intelligenza, i suoi occhi e le sue orecchie. Al contrario (i fratelli di Pollicino, l’Orco, le sue figlie) mangiano e dormono. Tutto il tema del racconto volge in qualche modo intorno all’alternativa “mangiare o essere mangiato”: Pollicino rinuncia al suo pane per far cadere le briciole e ritrovare la via di casa, ma vengono mangiate dagli uccelli; i fratelli nel bosco sentono l’avvicinarsi dei lupi affamati; nella casa dell’Orco ricevono un lauto pranzo ma corrono il rischio di essere a loro volta divorati dallo stesso.

In the fairy tale by Charles Perrault, Tom Thumb is abandoned in the woods by their parents, to go home faces all sorts of danger usually starting with the Ogre, who has no sympathy for the children.

The story of Tom Thumb, like Hansel and Gretel with the issue of hunger in the foreground, can be interpreted as a lesson for the children to exceed what Freud called the oral procedure. Thumb waiver to eat and instead learns to use his intelligence, his eyes and his ears. On the contrary (the brothers of Tom Thumb, the Orc, his daughters) eat and sleep. The whole theme of the story turns in some way around the alternative “eat or be eaten” Tom Thumb waive his bread to drop crumbs and find his way home, but are eaten by birds, and the brothers in the forest feel ‘approach of hungry wolves, in the house Orc receive a nutritious lunch but they run the risk of being devoured in turn by the same.
