Director’s notes

On a cold day in 1923, in Turin, Enrico Bottini and Carlo Nobis, two former students of the school Baretti, made famous by the book Heart of Edmondo De Amicis, meet at a fencing training. The two recognize each other and, although reluctantly, end up indulging in a colorful school reunion in their childhood, made up of parents, teachers and students as evoked in a grotesque catwalk Fellini while on stage materialize the ghosts of oppressive mother of Henry and the pathetic teacher’s red pen.

But the distance from those days now allows two men to mix the natural longing for youth spent with a critical eye towards doing good and the moralism of the school look that incorporates the impertinent criticism already moved from Umberto Eco’s book De Amicis and shows us the transformation of the rhetoric of the founding values of the newly formed United Italy in bellicose rhetoric of Fascist Italy.

Ten reforms later, the Italian school autonomy, federalism, globalization, surrendered any unifying image and any national educational mission. On the stage we see then, thanks to the contribution of the sharp pen of Stefano Benni, the comedy show, almost cabaret, a series of funny principals, officers and professors of Literature, Science and Religion, engaged in a desperate experimentalism permanent. Meanwhile, the students seek refuge in this surreal chaos who cynicism in youth language and who in a strategic autism. After oscillating between comedy, parody and satire, the show ends gently with the music of Paisiello and the words of Pasolini.

It seems that after the national reunification, the patriot Massimo D’Azeglio exclaimed: “Now that we have made Italy, we must make Italians.” It was perhaps for this preordered the educational project, the newly Italy immediately showed a keen interest in children’s literature, inflamed by the amazing exotic fantasies of Verona Salgari or the cloying morality of Turin De Amicis, for the light-hearted spiritaccio Tuscan Gian gale of Luigi Bertelli Vamba alias or the absolute masterpiece is the Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi Lorenzini alias. Every truly great nation should know that it is in childhood and education that lies the basis and strength of their identity, their values, their future. Yet it is bitter to see that for decades the school is subject to the most incredible harassment and experimentation, while, on the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, impassive witness (someone thrilled, pleased someone else) in the demolition of the national spirit in which the pathetic book Heart tried to contribute with his lookouts Lombard, Sardinian and drummers Florentine writers who have moved and educated generations of fathers, grandparents and great-grandparents.

Certainly today the book Heart can make them laugh. And in fact this show would laugh about it. Would like to entertain, in a somewhat ‘merciless but also a bit’ affectionate, behind the incredibly good Garrone and the incredibly bad Fanti, of the ethereal teacher with a red pen and consumptive old teacher, the privileged and the Derossi sfigatissimo mason, the intended victim to premature death as well as the son of the porter and all the little heroes of patriotic uplifting stories: a sort of class kantoriana dead resurrected by cunning smile of modernity.

But it would be too easy and a little ‘trivial simply smile of an old book impregnated doing good for an old school paternalistic. This show would also like to ask a question to the savvy modern, we are confident that today’s schools do not laugh at that then? As they will appear in the eyes of those who will live in the amazing adventures of one hundred and fifty other professors tossed between pof, integrated programs, debits, joint committees, feedback, peer evaluation and Kafkaesque bureaucracy? And the sloppy claims libertarian parents post the Sixties? And neoconformismo flocks of consumers to “passive music” that have replaced the aprons from boarding school for the uniforms low waist? Once the school was a fake father. Today it is a fake mother. But the Italians were able to do it?
